Activism - Stop ecocide
What is currently the definition of ecocide?
"Ecocide means unlawful or wanton acts committed with knowledge that there is a substantial likelihood of severe and either widespread or long-term damage to the environment being caused by those acts" (Source)
So "The term ‘ecocide’ refers to the ‘devastation and destruction of the environment to the detriment of life’, but no legal definition between States has yet been agreed. This project promotes the discussion towards the criminalisation of ecocide" (Source)
And at the same time more and more (neo-)liberal politicians (Source) are trying to stop the European regulations for Nature Restauration (The law) This is an American trend from the Trump-era (and still going strong in several GOP-states where the banning of books & the segragation between Cis/Trans or hetero/LGBTQI+ seems more important than the protection of the environment & wildlife) that is now flooding into the Old Continent through mostly right-wing parties (like the Spanish VOX for example).
Meanwhile experts believe we're in the midst of a sixth mass extinction. The planet has experienced five previous mass extinction events, the last one occurring 65.5 million years ago which wiped out the dinosaurs from existence.
A full list of the mass extinction events (Source):
- Ordovician-silurian Extinction: 440 million years ago.
- Devonian Extinction: 365 million years ago.
- Permian-triassic Extinction: 250 million years ago.
- Triassic-jurassic Extinction: 210 million years ago.
- Cretaceous-tertiary Extinction: 65 million Years Ago.
What caused the 'Big Five' mass extinctions?
All of the 'Big Five' were caused by some combination of rapid and dramatic changes in climate, combined with significant changes in the composition of environments on land or in the ocean (such as ocean acidification or acid rain from intense volcanic activity) (Source)
Alas this sixth extinction wave is not brought upon the planet by a comet or vulcanoes, but by a bipedal virus called humanity. We might be to late to completely stop it, but with binding laws of protection, a global change of mind and a different economic consumption model we might be able to save a few species of animals, birds, insects and plants who can inherit the Earth after humanity has perished by it's own hands.
Because nature isn’t one to move quickly (evolution, after all, is
measured in epochs). The deleterious effects experienced by Earth’s
biodiversity today are likely the result of the poor environmental
choices made by humans as long as 40 years ago. Where animals, such as
small birds, might experience these effects within 13 years, larger
animals will feel the hurt decades down the road. In other words, we are
just now starting to hear the canary in the coal mine, even though it’s
been chirping for years.(Source)
Protect the wildlife.
Protect the plantlife.
Protect the oceans.
Protect marine life.
Protect ecosystems.
Protect insects.
Stop putting profit before planet.
