Event - Romeinenfestival Tongeren (2025)

Afbeelding
Precisely a decade ago, during a rainy weekend, there was a Viking market in Tongeren and I was exited for this initiative by the Gallo-Roman museum. Alas it took me 10 years and living in Tongeren for half a decade, to cover another such event by this museum.  Luckily the Roman festival ( Romeinenfestival ) was worth the wait. A Roman market with historical artisans, workshops, free museum entrance, food, 50 re-enactors, including legionairs from several legions, periods and provinces and the thing everybody remembers: gladiator fights in the streets.  And the weather was much better. Event - De Quaeye Werelt (2025)

Afbeelding
Event - Casanova Danst in Alden Biesen

Afbeelding

Let's be really quick and dirty about this event: ▼ There was was an ice-cold wind, but most of the day it was dry, △ Each time the sun showed itself it was wonderful and we all smiled, △ Got a superb medieval cape that really helped against the wind, △ Great food ( including pancakes! ) and too much mead to taste, △ Überfriendly people ( visitors, reenactors, larpers & vendors.. sorry, I didn't run into anyone of the organisation, n or crew ) △ Excellent location: high upon the ramparts of the old city, △ Parked by accident right behind the corner of the event, △ Free parking, free toilets, and a fountain that will be useful during a future hot edition , △ Music by Skayrish , cannon fire, birds of prey, throwing things ( a bad combination with mead ),.. △ A fun afternoon eventhough it was tiny. . .   Let's provide you a few links: ▷ All photos can always be found on/downloaded from my Flickr and here ! ▷ A " How to download stills from Flickr ...

Event - Kroningsfeesten Tongeren (2023)

Afbeelding
Every 7 years over 10% of the population in the oldest city in Belgium participates in a week of reenactments, processions & after dark shows, all dedicated to the biblical Mary. ( Background story ) and they're aged between 89 years and 1 month old. In 2023, for the 19th edition since 1890 , there are over 3000 participants and they attracted 65000 spectators on the 1st day. 3 More days to go, I said after that 1st Sunday You can just feel a symbiotic connection, some strange form of unity between the citizens. Yes, it's a religious evocation of biblical stories and many participate out of pure heartfelt beliefs, but it's also more than that. It trancends simple religious zealousness both as a spectacle and as a way to create bridges & forge bonds between the citizens. The final day still lured over 50000 visitors to the town ( a day during which it was live-streamed ànd most events for that day were cancelled due to a code red storm warning ) Very impressive...

Event - Quaeye Werelt (2023)

BOEM ! That's the sound of Medieval cannons after almost 3hrs of sleep the night before and still I'm glad I went to see the great battle of the Quaeye Werelt reenactment.  Here's a short video on Clapper: Cannons & a bard (Put the sound on) Except some flashes of the battle, some honeywine & icecream with great people and a good hearthy meal with friends afterwards.. the day is a blur. I know it was hot. I know icecream fell on my toes, Alex played the lute for me.. I have probably stepped on peoples feet or hit them with the 200-600mm telelens.. or both. Luckily my cameras registered all that my mind has forgotten. .  Let us hope this time we don't have to wait 3 years till the next edition. . I haven't finished all stills..  not yet. Once it's done you can find them here on flickr . Meanwhile you can check where I'll be present next ( once I overcome the fatigue ) via Facebook  And here are a few samples: Link to this article: https:...
