Event - GLOW, the festival of lights (Eindhoven)

Normally I don't post much about the dayjob.. eventhough it's hardly only by day.. For this Sony video we dove into the night.. again. The 2nd time this week.. and it's only Wednesday.

"The new A7CII camera is perfect for streetphotography", Sony marketing said. So I invited someone with contagious enthousiasm, a very extravert style of streetphotography and an allround nice guy to GLOW, the festival of lights in Eindhoven.

We got lucky with the weather: it was the only dry evening of the week and by 9PM the terraces of the bars were so full you would think it was a Saturday evening in Summer instead of a November Wednesday.

With a filmcrew following his every move, it was not very easy to stealthily photograph people, so streetphotographer Brendan de Clercq changed his modus operandi and started using the contact he made with the people for street portraits instead of candid sniper portraits.

Quickly things got out of hand and entire bars were dancing on the tables to please the cameras.. and Brendan was going places where the public wasn't supposed to be..  Needless to say it was a fun evening and we got some crazy footage. Even the dayjob should have some fun moments, right?

Since Arno (A-cam) & I (B-cam) were both filming, most of my shots are video screencaps (made in-camera!).. except when they're not because nobody can stop me from taking a still.
I usually don't do humans on the street, so it was pretty far outside of my comfort zone.. until it started feeling like working on a festival again.. ho-wait: it was a festival!

Brendan used the A7CII. We shot with the FX6, the ZV-E1 and even with the A7CR. 

And yes, I should really get into making some menu videos about all those new cameras for my Sony tech Youtube channel. Alas there are only 168 hours in a week.

GLOW as an event was really impressive. But hey: I'm a geek for lights & fire! Next year I'll be back with some real focus on the event instead of just trying to get all those crazy interactions on film.

Eventhough many September days in 2024 feel more like November days, on Sunday the 15th it was good to be outside. Outside in the park of castle d'Ursel in Hingene the infamous Geert had gathered yet again a mass of cosplayers & photogs and as always I had hidden my set, this time behind an old wall. No line of sight onto the castle, but perfect for " Cosplayers with natural light " & some " Extreme shoot through ". Why not use the castle as a backdrop, you might ask?  It's a pretty castle, yes. It has one really interesting side, alas it was too crowded to build a set & get a constant, uninterupted view. Sony tech - Using A-mount lenses on E-mount cameras

This article is about using (vintage) Minolta/Sigma/Sony/Tamron/.. A-mount lenses on contemporary Sony E-mount cameras. Since the Sony LA-EA5 adapter has been released I have been answering dozens of the same questions about compatibility issues from both retailers and end-users. Some questions & personal experiences with the different adapters were special, so I have tested some combinations and made a small list of my findings. Event - Castlefest 2024

We were so scared! Scared it would rain.. Being wet all day isn't fun. Having the car getting stuck in a drowned parking meadow is not optimal. Getting the cameras soaked is really bad.. but the worst about rain is the mud & puddles that make everything impassable with a wheelchair However there was no need to be scared: Castlefest had some nice Sunday Summer weather! Event - Stadsmuzikantenfestival & MoMent

Hey, don't you wanna know how I've been since I left you behind? (sic ISE) Only last year, in 2023, I discovered there was a music festival in Tongeren. Several bands on the list like were frequently played on the alternative radio station I listen to ( Willy Radio ). On top of that it was held in several locations scattered throughout the medieval beguinage. So I had to shoot it.. at least once..  I went for Isbells & Johannes is zijn naam . I discovered Echo Beatty , Roufaida & the fun of Lupagangang . Got Iron Maiden-beer & ice-cream to cool off. It was a good day.. so let's if 2024 can be as good. Event - Kroningsfeesten Tongeren

Every 7 years over 10% of the population in the oldest city in Belgium participates in a week of reenactments, processions & after dark shows, all dedicated to the biblical Mary. ( Background story ) and they're aged between 89 years and 1 month old. In 2023, for the 19th edition since 1890 , there are over 3000 participants and they attracted 65000 spectators on the 1st day. 3 More days to go, I said after that 1st Sunday You can just feel a symbiotic connection, some strange form of unity between the citizens. Yes, it's a religious evocation of biblical stories and many participate out of pure heartfelt beliefs, but it's also more than that. It trancends simple religious zealousness both as a spectacle and as a way to create bridges & forge bonds between the citizens. The final day still lured over 50000 visitors to the town ( a day during which it was live-streamed ànd most events for that day were cancelled due to a code red storm warning ) Very impressive

Collab - Dryad fantasy boudoir

Sometimes models come with a boudoir proposition that both sparks my interest and comes at a moment where I have the time to execute it: fantasy boudoir with a Dryad and an Elf in a magical forest .. but softer than the work for The Dark Cathedral and non-nude. " OK, let's do it ," I nodded while already scrolling through my cramped agenda. Evidently I needed a location.. and a back-up location.. just in case . A magical meadow with wildflowers, tree-filtered light and surrounded by young treelings that I had spotted during a hike just days before seemed perfect. A Monday-shoot would ensure that few to no hikers would interfere. Evidently Murphy's law struck, as during the last check at the location a crew was mowing everything away. No worries, for there's a plan B: a bit further into the wild where I had previously done a barbarian shoot . Water, young green trees, awesome eventhough with less magical light. Collab - Halloween at Verbeke Foundation

Have I ever told you the story about a shooting day during which I survived all day on 1 glass of white wine? Well, that day was yesterday.  Now, knowing myself, this could easily become a long & boring story so I'll stick to the famous 6-points synopsys: ▷ Drove from the South-East of Limburg to the Verbeke Foundation, a unique and quirky museum for modern art in East-Flanders and got there really early, ▷ Started shooting cosplayers in full Halloween mode near a derelict train-crane, ▷ Drank 1 glass of white wine, ▷ Shot even more Halloween cosplayers till 15minutes after the museum had closed, ▷ Suddenly realized I had completely forgotten to eat, drink, be polite & socialize.. again. ▷ The end? Sony tech - The A7RV menu system

For those who have received their Sony A7RV camera and are new to the Sony ecosystem or who want to find some of the new features hidden in the menu of this 61MP-behemoth with it's extra AI Autofocussing processor ( yes, that makes 3 processors inside 1 camera ) I'm doing a walkthough. There will be some real-life samples with cats, cows, fighterjets & horses, some things you probably already know and best of all: 40 minutes of my hoarse bronchitis-stricken voice. Enjoy .
