Red Cathedral

Het Aalterse  Kasteel van Poeke  is een sprookjesachtig waterkasteel met een opvallende zalmroze gevel. Het wordt omringd door een historisch park van 56 hectare. Het domein kent een rijke geschiedenis die teruggaat tot 1139 en staat historisch vooral bekend om zijn strategische en vaak bloedige rol in de Gentse Opstanden . Zowel in 1382 ( tegen Lodewijk van Male ) als in 1452 ( tegen Filips de Goede ) werd de toenmalige burcht bezet door de Gentenaren. Na de herovering door de Bourgondische troepen in 1453 werd het slot volledig verwoest en de overgebleven bezetters opgehangen. Daarna lag het domein er ruim een eeuw lang  als een overwoekerde ruïne bij, vol geesten en dodelijke herinneringen.  Later kwam het in handen van adellijke families zoals de Preudhomme d'Hailley en Pycke de Peteghem. Eventhough many September days in 2024 feel more like November days, on Sunday the 15th it was good to be outside. Outside in the park of castle d'Ursel in Hingene the infamous Geert had gathered yet again a mass of cosplayers & photogs and as always I had hidden my set, this time behind an old wall. No line of sight onto the castle, but perfect for " Cosplayers with natural light " & some " Extreme shoot through ". Why not use the castle as a backdrop, you might ask?  It's a pretty castle, yes. It has one really interesting side, alas it was too crowded to build a set & get a constant, uninterupted view. On a quiet day I'll gladly combine the front of the castle with an epoque gown.. but that sunny Sunday was NOT a quiet day. Sometimes, when you don't choose a shooting location yourself, you arrive, you sigh deeply and think: " How am I going to make this work? " But last Sunday I arrived at the castle of Tillegem and went: " Oh, this is a pretty castle.. I like that tower. " So I just looked for an angle from where I could set up camp and did just that after only a quarter tour around. There where doublessly better & more interesting angles. I could have changed spots as I usually do.. But with an ankle that's still healing from serious injury this wasn't an option. Hence, yes.. most shots have a very similar look. After a wet, cold & weird Summer, this September has become a perfect Indian Summer; warm, sunny and with steampunkish dresses. The weather was perfect & most people were smiling.
