Have you ever been to a carnaval parade?  There are several genres. You've got the stylish & elegant Venetian style parades and there are those where the people take back the right to satire everything they see in the world around them. The best known & biggest ( 105k spectators on Sunday ) carnaval parade in my country is the carnaval in Aalst which happened at the same moment as the one in Tongeren.  But I took my electric step and vroomed to the eldest city in Belgium: Atuatuca Tungrorum ( founded 7 BC ) and I enjoyed myself. . Just like many other regions, Limburg has a rich carnaval history and you could really see the people yearn for this parade. The 2019 canaraval got cancelled last minute due to a storm. 2020-21 Had a pandemic. Apparently there was a tiny last-minute carnaval parade in 2022.. yet I seem to have missed it.. and not just me. While I'm recovering from surgery I finally have enough time to read some of the books & comics that have been piling up. I can catch up on serials ( ATM enjoying The rig, Alice in Borderland, Willow, Crakau Monsters, Barbaren, Midnight Club, 1899, Mythic Quest,.. Afterwards are planned National Treasure: Edge of History, Star Wars: Andor , The imperfects, Last of us, ..) And at last I can process those gigabytes of RAWs I never had time to look at because work & events always have priority. There are two kind of genre events in the Benelux: The big ones. Nearly all of them are owned by large corporations ( multinationals even ), held in big venues and these have become éxtremely expensive for both visitors and vendors. For the current entry prices you expect to be WOW-ed and entertained at a high level. High expectations are always difficult to meet. And there are a few tiny events trying to stay afloat. Just like for the big events the prices to get something organised have gone through the roof. But they mostly work with volonteers instead of a corporate overhead workforce consisting of more high payed managers than workers and they don't need to bring home truckloads of cash to please the shareholders & investors.
