Sony tech - Rename your photo & video files in-camera

Normally all your photos will be named "DSC123" and your videos "C123". But that's the best way to loose oversight, to overwrite and to forget what was shot when/with which camera.

How to automatically name your photos & videos? Banner for a Sony tech video on youtube

There are solutions for this in the new and newest Sony Alpha / FX / ZV / RX - cameras

PHOTO FILES

You should give your photo files personalized names instead of that generic ”Dsc” prefix.
This is possible on the current Alpha, Rx, Zv, and FX‐cameras from Sony.

I give mine the prefix of the used camera because I work with several cameras.
But you might just as well use something more personal like something that points to your name or your company / brand name.
Or even change the name temporarily if you have a big project.

Why?
A few of the many reasons:
1. I own and work with several cameras (during events normally 2 main + 1 BTS) So it's important while editing/sorting to immediately see which camera made what.
2. We often work in teams during large events. This way we immediately see who made which photo. (especially when quickly sending the JPG's during the event to the socials team for immediate upload)
3. If you work with more than 1 camera and all files are named the same I guarantee you that at 1 point they'll be at the same number during a shoot/event and overwrite each other while copying/sending the files.

4. A bonus reason I needed last month: https://tinyurl.com/SonyCopyRename 🤫

And yes: you only have 3 letters, numbers, or symbols to work with, so be creative.

How?
Put your camera in photo mode.
In the new menu choose Red > File > File/Folder settings > Set file name and choose your name wisely!
In the classic menu Setup / Suitcase > Setup5 >  File/Folder settings > Set file name

VIDEO FILES

Stop complaining that all your videos are named the generic ”C” and some numbers.

I remember the RAGE when such C-files overwrote others with the same number or I couldn’t figure out what was filmed on which camera while editing.

In the Sony Alpha full frame cameras since the A7SIII, in the ZV-E1 and in all FX-cameras you can personalize the names of your video files.
You can name them and put the date in.

BUT: you need a fast card like the SD XC-cards or CF Express A’s. Otherwise it reverts to the standard ”C1234”

How?

Put your camera in video or S&Q mode.
In the menu choose Red > File > File settings > Title name settings and choose a smart name.

Then go one step back and change the File Name Format. I usually choose Date+Title.
